…the hands (and occasional mizzle-damp fingers) behind MizzleInk.

I’ve been making art for as long as I can remember. Not as a career that started last year when “surface pattern design” became a buzzword, but as something I’ve quietly done for the best part of fifty years — through decades of sewing and curtain-making, through a pandemic spent drawing thousands of gnomes, and now, finally, as patterns of my own.

I work from a home studio at the foot of a beacon here in Cornwall, where the weather has a habit of turning to mizzle — that fine, drifting, can’t-quite-call-it-rain drizzle that gives this shop its name. It felt right. Cornwall shows up in almost everything I draw, whether that’s directly — coastal shapes, salt-worn colours — or just in the unhurried, slightly damp, deeply stubborn way I approach making things.

Every pattern here is drawn by hand. No AI, ever.

That’s not a marketing line — it’s a promise. Every leaf, every repeat, every colourway starts as pencil or Procreate under my own hand, checked and re-checked until it tiles the way it should. If a design carries the MizzleInk name, I drew it.

Why patterns?

After years of sewing and curtain-making — properly hands-on, William Morris-adjacent work — surface pattern felt like the natural next step. It let me keep the parts of that craft I loved (repeats, colour families, the satisfaction of a print that works) without needing a sewing machine at 11pm. These days you’ll find MizzleInk patterns on fabric, wallpaper, stationery, and print-on-demand products — coastal, cottagecore, woodland, floral, and seasonal collections, all designed from a “would I actually buy this” perspective rather than chasing whatever’s trending.

The studio isn’t just me.

I’ve got three cats on staff, technically. Alfie, a ginger ragdoll, mostly supervises from a sunny spot. Monty, a very large Maine Coon, supervises the sunny spot Alfie isn’t in. And Betsy has appointed herself Head of Printer Quality Control, which mostly means sitting on it. My husband plays a genuinely active supporting role too — equal parts sounding board, second pair of eyes, and the person who reminds me to eat lunch.
